Religion
We will be using the Sunday Visitor, Call to Faith textbook and curriculum in conjunction with the Diocese of Joliet Faith Formation Curriculum. The complete set of standards can be found on the Diocesan website: https://www.dioceseofjoliet.org/cso/subsectioncontent.php?
Our goal is to know and have a better understanding of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church and how we can live our faith each and every day.

English-Language Arts
I am excited to be using the Wonders curriculum and resources for Language Arts this year for the 5th graders. They used this program last year so this year will continue to build upon the the core skills that they have already encountered. Wonders is a fully connected program built for English Language Arts, English Language Development, intervention, and immersion. Wonders is filled with exemplars, award-winners and other high-interest literary and informational texts that range across many genres, eras, and cultures. As students engage with the Essential Questions each week, they’re gaining access to complex texts, collaborating with their peers, and becoming accomplished at writing to sources.
Each week, students will receive 8 vocabulary words and 20 spelling words that correspond to their readings. This program also includes leveled readers that we are using in small groups. Students will be able access games and activities to practice the skills we are learning in class on the Wonders website, which is accessible from home. Please encourage you student to show you these tools.
Our writing skills will be centered around the Six Traits of Writing: Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions (grammar). Our major writing assignments will include; expository, personal narrative, and persuasive essays.
5th grade will participate in several novel studies throughout the year.

Geography
5th graders will be using the Holt World Geography textbook this year. Our curriculum will integrate standards-based content and research-based reading instruction, offering the students support so they understand and remember what they learn. It is my goal to foster geographic literacy and help my students discover the world they live in today.
