Happy New Year!
I hope that you all enjoyed the Christmas break, it went by so fast! I am looking forward to seeing all of the bright, shiny faces tomorrow morning.
Fifth grade is going to start the year off by celebrating the Epiphany and the end of the Christmas season as we move into Ordinary Time on the liturgical calendar. We are also going to spend a little time talking about our New Year's resolutions and a few ways that we can take care of Mother Earth in the new year. Thanks to ComEd, everyone in 5th grade has been given a Super Savers box filled with energy reducing items for your household. I will be sending the kits home tomorrow along with a letter explaining the Super Savers Program. I hope that this will be a fun experience for the kids at school as well as at home.
We are also going to start preparing for the Scrips Spelling Bee on January 22nd. The kids will be using Freckle to study spelling and vocabulary, they will also use the Quizlet, Kahoot, and Scrip websites to help them prepare. We will have one 5th grade representative and one alternate for the competition, they will be chosen next week. I will be sending information home with a list of words and some tips for studying.
The National Geographic Geography Bee will also take place this month on January 29th. Fifth grade will need two representatives and one alternate for the competition. We will be studying for this competition in class for the next few weeks and will pick the contestants by January 23rd.
Please note some additional important dates for January:
January 18th - No School - Teacher Institute Day
January 21st - No School - Martin Luther King Day
January 25th - Fun Food Friday
January 27th - February 1st - Catholic Schools Week
Please let the kids know that Jaws had a wonderful Christmas break. He has returned to school and is looking forward to showing off his... BRAND NEW CAR! (I'll send pics tomorrow.)
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
Have a wonderful evening, try not to be too sad about the Bears, there's always next year!
Blessings,
Michele Davis

Good Evening 5th Grade Parents,
I hope you are all enjoying the last few hours of this beautiful weekend.
Last week was very busy with IOWA testing. We will be taking the Cogat tests on Monday and Tuesday and then we'll finally be done with all standardized testing. Yay!!!! Please make sure the kids get plenty of rest tonight and a hearty breakfast in the morning.
It was wonderful to see so many of you at Mass last Wednesday. The kids did a great job planning, preparing, and participating in the Mass. Our next Mass will be on All Saints Day.
This week in Religion the students will be finishing a chapter about the presence of God's signs in our lives. Please ask them where they find signs of God's presence and share with them where you find signs of God's Truth, Beauty, and Goodness in your own life.
We will be finishing up the second chapter in our Wonders book this week and we will have a weekly assessment and a spelling test on Friday, Sept. 28th. They have a Wonder's printout that outlines all of the concepts and stories that we are working with this week.
We will be finishing up a quick unit on latitude and longitude in Geography this week and will be starting a unit on map skills.
Congratulations to the girls volleyball team! They played an awesome game against the 6th grade girls. There is a lot of talent on the team and it was exciting to watch them play! Thank you to the coaches! You're doing a great job teaching them and developing their skills.
Have a great week!
God Bless,
Michele Davis

Hello 5th Grade Parents,
5th grade has been busy this week!
We are diving into the Wonders ELA series! The kids have received both Wonders textbooks, the literature book can be kept at home, the reading/writing book will travel from school to home as needed. This week our readings focused on the theme of "How people get what they need." The students should have brought home a paper outlining all the concepts that we are working on in addition to the spelling and vocabulary words. They will have a spelling test and chapter assessment next week on Tuesday, 9/18. All of the students have access to the Wonders website through ConnectEd and can practice their spelling and vocabulary words using the website games.
We completed the second chapter in our religion books and had a quiz on it today. Chapter 2 focused on God's creation and our responsibility to be stewards of earth and its inhabitants. They have been asking for a classroom pet on a daily basis and they all seem pretty excited about taking care of one of God's critters, so please give the kids the good news that I have applied for the grant for us to have a classroom pet.
The kids did a great job in geography this week creating a "Place" of their own using the 5 Themes of geography. They created posters and slideshows to present their unique places. I am going to video-tape the kids presenting them next week and will post them on SeeSaw.
This week brought the anniversary of the September 11th tragedy and I wanted to let you know how thoughtful and reverent your children were while discussing the subject with both me and Mrs. Basel (she was our guest teacher on Tuesday). They had lots of questions and beautiful answers to the question of how to help each other and make our world a better place.
Here are a few things to know for next week:
IOWA testing all week.
Monday: 8:00 - 9:15 - Reading parts 1 & 2
Tuesday: 8:00 - 9:15 - Math parts 1 & 2
Wed: Mass at 8:15 then testing until lunch: Written Expression, Science, and Social Studies
Thurs: 8:00 - 9:15 - Vocabulary, Spelling, Capitalization, and Punctuation
Friday: 8:00 - 9:15 - Computation
Please make sure that the kiddos are getting to bed early and having a good breakfast in the mornings next week.
5th grade is planning and participating in the Mass on Wed at 8:15am. We hope that you will be able to join us. Since we only have 18 kids in the class, each one of them has a job to do. If your child has a speaking or singing part in the Mass they received the words to practice this weekend. Mrs. Serio will practice with the singers next week.
Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the beautiful weather.
Blessings,
Michele Davis
